What are most probable causes of piston pump failures?

It is the main hydraulic pump installed in All terrain GMK-3055 Grove hydraulic crane.Three cranes were imported from Germany in the year 2008 and hyd pumps of all the cranes failed one by one within three years. The problem started with abnormal noise from the pump and then seizure of the moving parts as if it was running dry.No maintenance issues with the oil and filters. The crane is equipped with ECOS5 and everything is controlled through I/O boards and ESX Control units. There are no ERROR CODES shown on the screen of its built in computer when a pump fails. Even then I suspect a malfunctioning electronic componenet like some sensors or Electromagnetic valve or any thing. Can anybody help me to diagnose the root causes? I dont know the OEM of this pump as there is no name plate on it.|||Contact a crane distributor who handles the Grove line of cranes such as Manitowoc.

They would have service people who could help you.

Check the oil coolers to see that they aren't overheating the pumps, also the valves.|||First place to check is the suction strainer or inlet line to make sure it is flowing oil into the pump. Most likely the oil was dirty and now that the pumps have failed the oil is definitely contaminated. The whole machine will need to be flushed and the tank cleaned and before starting again or you will have more problems. Contamination is the number one case of hydraulic failure. Piston pumps require 10 micron filtration and good suction flow.

The sound may have been CAVITATION from bad suction condition or the pumps failing from the contamination, good luck.
